WHAT I BELIEVE
“You can build a very good business on reputation, repeat work and referrals. But if you want more control over what happens next, you need to create new opportunities deliberately.”

About me
I’m Kevin—an engineer, consultant and business owner with more than two decades experience in construction and the built environment.
My background is in building services engineering. Like most engineers, I began by concentrating on the technical work. But as my career developed, I became increasingly involved in finding clients, building relationships and winning professional appointments.
When I started my own engineering consultancy, business development became part of the job.
There was no sales department filling the pipeline for me. If I wanted to work with a particular organisation, I had to identify the right people, understand why they might want to speak to me, make contact and start a useful conversation.
That is how I learned business development: by doing it.
I researched hundreds of organisations, found decision-makers, wrote letters, made calls, arranged meetings, developed relationships, prepared proposals and negotiated appointments.
Some conversations produced work quickly. Others took months or years. Plenty went nowhere.
Over time, I learned what worked, what didn’t and where effort was being wasted. More importantly, I realised that business development does not need to feel mysterious or depend upon being a natural salesperson.
It can be approached practically and systematically.
What I do now
I help engineering, construction and built-environment businesses become more deliberate about the work they win.
That might mean helping you:
-
Decide which work, markets and clients to pursue
-
Find and approach the right organisations
-
Start more worthwhile commercial conversations
-
Develop those conversations into genuine opportunities
-
Build a business development process your people can actually use
I do this through practical business development programmes and consultancy work.
The programmes teach you and your team how to do it.
The consultancy work involves me more directly—understanding the business, identifying where the best opportunities lie and working alongside you to pursue them.
What it is like to work with me
I’m practical, direct and interested in what is genuinely happening inside the business.
I won’t arrive with a generic strategy, fill your diary with unnecessary meetings or try to turn technical people into stereotypical salespeople.
I will ask questions, examine what is happening, help make some clear decisions and get on with the work.
Because substantial professional work rarely begins with a clever pitch. It usually begins with the right people having a useful conversation—and finding a good reason to continue it.
That is how I built my own consultancy, and it is what I now help other businesses do more deliberately.

Good work rarely begins with a clever pitch. It begins with a useful conversation.
“
Business development should feel practical, human and manageable.
“
Choose the right organisations. Speak to the right people. Give the relationship time.
“
Ask good questions, make clear decisions and get on with the work.
